Honda & Acura Maintenance Minder Codes, Decoded

By the Import Auto Service Center team · 35+ years of Honda & Acura experience · Updated

Your Honda or Acura doesn't use a fixed mileage schedule anymore. It calculates service need from how you actually drive, then reports it as a letter plus one or more numbers. Here's the full translation.

The main codes: A and B

A — Replace engine oil

Oil change only. The system tracks engine operating conditions, not just mileage.

B — Replace engine oil and oil filter, plus inspections

Includes the oil service plus inspection of front and rear brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox and boots, suspension, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines, all fluid levels, exhaust system and fuel lines.

The sub-codes: 1 through 7

1 — Rotate tires

And check tire inflation and condition.

2 — Replace air cleaner element and cabin air filter

Plus inspect the drive belt. In Central Florida pollen and construction dust, these load up faster than the average.

3 — Replace transmission fluid

Honda-specific fluid only — ATF DW-1 for automatics, HCF-2 for CVTs. Generic 'universal' fluid is a known cause of CVT failure.

4 — Replace spark plugs, timing belt, inspect water pump and valve clearance

This is the big one on V6 engines. Do not defer it.

5 — Replace engine coolant

Honda Type 2 long-life coolant.

6 — Replace rear differential fluid

All-wheel-drive models — CR-V AWD, Pilot, MDX, RDX.

7 — Replace brake fluid

Recommended roughly every 3 years regardless of mileage, because fluid absorbs moisture.

Want this priced for your exact vehicle?

We'll inspect, photograph what we find, and send you an itemized estimate before any work starts.

Reading a combined code

Codes stack. 'B12' means the B service (oil, filter and full inspection) plus 1 (tire rotation) plus 2 (air filter and cabin filter). 'A125' means an oil change, tire rotation, filters, and coolant replacement.

You'll also see a wrench icon and a remaining-oil-life percentage. At 15% the system prompts you; at 0% it reads 'SERVICE DUE NOW'; negative mileage means you're past due.

What we do differently on a Maintenance Minder service

We perform the exact service your code calls for — no more, no less — and we show you the inspection results with photos so you can see why anything additional was recommended.

We also use the correct Honda and Acura specification fluids for every sub-code. That matters most on code 3: the wrong transmission fluid in a Honda CVT can cause a failure that costs more than every other service on this page combined.

And we reset the Maintenance Minder correctly before you leave, so the next interval is calculated from the right starting point.

How to reset it yourself

On most models: turn the ignition to ON without starting, press the SEL/RESET or TRIP button until the oil life indicator appears, hold it for about ten seconds until the display blinks, then press and hold again until it resets to 100%. Newer touchscreen models do it through Settings → Vehicle → Maintenance Info → Reset.

One caution: only reset a code after the service is actually performed. Resetting to clear a nagging light hides the schedule the car is tracking on your behalf.
