Check Engine Light Diagnosis in Orlando: What You're Paying For
By the Import Auto Service Center team · 35+ years of Honda & Acura experience · Updated
A code is not a diagnosis. Understanding that difference is the single biggest way Honda and Acura owners avoid wasting money on parts their car didn't need.
What a free code read actually tells you
A parts-store scanner reads the stored trouble code — say, P0420. What most people are told is 'you need a catalytic converter.' What P0420 actually means is 'catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1.' That's a symptom report, not a cause.
The real cause is frequently an upstream or downstream oxygen sensor reading incorrectly, an exhaust leak before the sensor, a misfire dumping raw fuel into the converter, or a fuel trim problem. Replacing the converter without testing for those means the light comes back — after you've paid for the most expensive part on the list.
What proper diagnosis includes
Why diagnostic time is a real line item
Diagnosis is skilled labor with expensive equipment behind it, and it is the part of the job that determines whether the repair actually works. A shop that gives away diagnosis for free usually recovers it by selling parts — and has an incentive to guess quickly rather than test carefully.
We'd rather charge for the diagnostic hour and get it right. In practice that's cheaper for you than a converter, a sensor, and a coil pack that didn't fix anything.
Honda and Acura patterns we see constantly
P0420 on a high-mileage V6
Very often an oxygen sensor or exhaust leak, not the converter. Test before you buy.
P0301–P0306 misfires
Coil, plug, injector, or compression. Swapping coils blindly is a coin flip; testing tells you which.
VTC actuator rattle on cold start
A brief startup rattle on 2.4L engines is a known pattern with a known fix. It's frequently misdiagnosed as timing chain failure.
P0128 / slow warm-up
Usually a stuck-open thermostat — cheap to fix, and it hurts fuel economy the whole time it's ignored.
Codes right after fueling
Loose or failed gas cap and EVAP leaks. Sometimes genuinely free to fix.
How we quote it
We don't publish flat prices, because an honest number depends on your exact model, engine, and what we find on inspection. What we will do is give you a written, itemized estimate before any work starts — and you approve it line by line from your phone.
